Click here for a link to WCB Regulations for Commercial Diver
- January 2012 - Last September WorkSafe BC discovered that they have no "regulatory authority" to issue diver's certificates. As a result amendments are having to be made to part 24 of the regulations. In short by February 2015 we will all need to have our DCBC certification. When we apply to the DCBC they require that we prove we are currently working as commercial divers in order for us to receive DCBC certification. This means sending with our application a copy of a current dive medical issued by a recognized physician, (see the DCBC website for a current list of doctors), a current first aid certificate and guess what guys and gals, a logbook. Not only should your logbook have current logged dives in it but they need to be logged correctly and verified by your dive Supervisor. DCBC certificates expire and there is a certification fee attached. The certification is valid for 5 years, or for initial certification after training, 2 years.
- There has always been a standard at the CSA for dive supervisors and subsequently a DCBC certification to support it. With WorkSafe BC getting out of the certification business the time is now for all you dive supervisors out there to get your dive supervisor certification before WorkSafe make it a regulation. It is only a matter of time. A dive "supervisor" who is only that because he or she is carrying the clipboard cannot be held accountable unless they are officially put in charge and have voluntairly accepted that responsibility by having themselves trained and certified for that position. It should not take long for Health and Safety to realize that to meet the standard the CSA put forth dive supervisors and dive tenders need to be able to prove their competency by having their DCBC certification.
- DiveSafe is pleased to announce that we are now the 'largest' dive school in Canada having certified more diver's than any other school in 2011. Our students came from as far away as Australia, Trinidad, and France. We had some friends from south of the border come as well. A big thanks to all our students, local and from abroad for participating and a special thanks to industry for putting them all to work!
- "Rigs to Reefs" isn't a new program but it is a controversial one. It may be the common ground where the recreational diver meets the commercial one. Let us know what you think about this subject by joining us on Facebook to discuss it.
- The Eastern seaboard provinces have discovered regulations and are pushing for their divers to get their DCBC certification. We have had a number of divers come from out east to get their certifications and are currently registering more for this year. There are opportunities there for work as well. If you are a DiveSafe Diver interested in heading out east for some work contact our office.
- Our new Website is alive and kicking. We would like feedback from everyone on what you think it is like. What can we do to improve it or add to it. email Peter your comments, peter [at] divesafe [dot] com.
